Why is America so Fascinated with Mark McGwire?

McGwire Hit 70 Home Runs in 1998

Why has ESPN and other news services been so involved with McGwire and the news breaking that he has officially taken steroids.  Does it honestly surprise anyone that one of the greatest hitters in the 90s was on the juice?

This is just further proof that America loves controversy.  America loves people who embarrass themselves and their game.  Tim Donaghy is another perfect example, as this guy was on ESPN nearly every day for a month a little while back.  So yes, McGwire admitted to taking steroids, and yes, maybe that is important news, but why does ESPN need to replay the interview thousands of times.  I was at a bar in Boston on Monday night, and for a good thirty minutes the only coverage of sports on ESPN was McGwire.  This poor guy is trying to reconcile his life.  Is it too late?  Absolutely, this should have been done years ago, but by this time, who is truly surprised?  The only thing that should be talked about is how he should step up and ask for his sevently home run season to be stricken from the record books, and then Sosa and Bonds should follow suit.  We all know Roger Maris is the only one over sixty home runs who has not juiced, and the record should remain that way.  I do not care what supplements he used, or who he used them with.  All we need to know is that “Big Mac” Mark McGuire used illegal supplements and has tainted his image forever.
