To anyone familiar with Big East basketball, it is no surprise that Jerry Wainwright has been fired from DePaul as of yesterday afternoon. DePaul was 7-8 this season, and finished 0-18 in the Big East last season, not including a Big East Tournament win over Cincinnati and loss to our Friars.
However, in my opinion losing 22 straight Big East regular season games is unacceptable on any level. I do not necessarily agree with the timing of such a move, coming before a winnable game at home against the Friars, but it most certainly needed to be made at some point. Hell, DePaul fans even made a website entitled http://www.firejerrywainwright.com/ . Friar fans have known what it has been like to watch a team with a bad coach, but even I have never an occurrence where so many people are against a coach.
Wainwright will be replaced by assistant Tracy Webster, who now will have an even taller task in beating Providence on Thursday night.
